Reflections on #SpeakOnIt2022 & How Health Communication Is Informed By Black Experience (s)
On Tuesday April 5th, 2022 at 12pm, 61 attendees logged into Communicate For Health Justice (CFHJ)’S first Summit, #SpeakOnIt! The online event gathered the attention of multiple professionals representing various industries, from healthcare, to health departments across the country. The agenda for the two-hour Summit consisted of opening and closing remarks, a panel, two unique breakout sessions, and virtual interactive booths. (Please contact CFHJ to access the full recording.) But unlike other health communication-focused conferences, #SpeakOnIt took the time to center pro-Black communications, and why it matters for health equity. In this report, CFHJ will reflect on the highlights of #SpeakOnIt 2022, how it's unique, why health communication is different from health education, and demonstrate the importance of developing health communications that is informed by Black experience (s). (NOTE: It is important to point out that there is not a singular "Black experience." Honoring the diversity of Black experiences matters.)
